Numerous cases of social media crime  are being unearthed every other day. Some common crime categorizations are:

Defamation

Defamation is the communication of a false statement that harms the reputation of an individual person, business, product, group, government, religion, or nation as well as other various kinds of defamation that retaliate against groundless criticism.
Defamation may occur via Facebook medium by posting inappropriate comments or posts about any individual or business entity without prior consent of the involved victim.

Cyberbullying

Cyberbullying is the use of social networks to repeatedly harm or harass other people in a deliberate manner. According to U.S. Legal Definitions, “cyber-bullying could be limited to posting rumors or gossips about a person in the internet bringing about hatred in other’s minds; or it may go to the extent of personally identifying victims and publishing materials severely defaming and humiliating them”.
Examples of cyberbullying include mean text messages or emails, rumors sent by email or posted on social networking sites (like Facebook), and embarrassing pictures, videos, websites, or fake profiles.

Stalking

Cyberstalking, simply put, is online stalking. It has been defined as the use of technology, particularly on social networking websites, to harass someone. Common characteristics include false accusations, monitoring, threats, identity theft, and data destruction or manipulation. Cyberstalking also includes exploitation of minors, be it sexual or otherwise. Cyberstalking typically involves harassing a person with messages, written threats, and other persistent online behavior that endangers a person’s safety.
Cyberstalking can be terribly frightening. It can destroy friendships, credit, careers, self-image, and confidence.

Identity Theft

With huge personally identifiable information available on Facebook, it becomes a favorite target of cyber criminals to gather sensitive information.
Hackers may download the images uploaded in your Facebook Albums or browse through your Friend List to perform a wide range of further attacks that may lead to defamation and harassment.

Scams

Various Facebook scams are budding these days to fool victims by promising them to “disclose secret crush” or “reveal the profile visitors”. These services are not otherwise provided by Facebook services and appear lucrative to novice Facebook Users.
Eventually the hackers succeed in misguiding Facebook users to disclose personal information, that can be sometimes even financial.

Harassment

Harassment covers a wide range of behaviors of an offensive nature. It is commonly understood as behavior intended to disturb or upset, and it is characteristically repetitive. In the legal sense, it is intentional behavior which is found threatening or disturbing.
From sexual harassment to life threats, there has been a significant increase in the number of harassment cases happening on Facebook due to its popularity.

So keep aware of such crimes and be safe while enjoying the blessings of Social Networking platforms.
