Tax Payment was Deducted from Your Account scam !!!

Today I received an email from the email address admin@incometax.gov.in stating that 99,000 RS Tax Payment was Deducted from Your Account.

The email body went on like this:

Dear Customer,

We Have automatically deducted your tax payment from your Netbanking access
Please download and view your reciept below attached to this mail

Sincerely,

Income Tax Department

Reserve Bank of India

I looked at the email carefully and noticed that the link in the email was mentioning the website www.incometaxindia.in/ while the actual website was  http://incometaxindia.gov.in/.

The original website for filing Income Tax is http://incometaxindia.gov.in/ and emails if any should come from the same domain.

Further, the link give in the email actually redirected to some other malicious webpage.

These two primary checks assured me that it was a spam or fraudulent email and I simply ignored it.

Had I gone any further, this webpage in turn might have collected sensitive user information such as credit card details or bank details to claim a refund in the mentioned account. Not just this it might have even download some unwanted software to infect my computer or phone (depends on what device I was using at that time!).The software may have caused further damage such as leakage of sensitive personal/financial information from my device or even crash the device!!!!!!

Just be aware that the Income Tax Department does not request detailed personal information through e-mail.

The Income Tax Department does not send e-mail requesting your PIN numbers, passwords or similar access information for credit cards, banks or other financial accounts.

If you receive an e-mail from someone claiming to be the authorized by Income Tax Department or directing you to an Income Tax website:
  • Do not reply.
  • Do not open any attachments. Attachments may contain malicious code that will infect your computer.
  • Do not click on any links. If you clicked on links in a suspicious e-mail or phishing website then do not enter confidential information like bank account, credit card details.
  • Do not cut and paste the link from the message into your browsers, phishers can make link look like real, but it actually send you to different websites.
  • Use anti-virus software, anti spyware, and a firewall and keep them updated. Some phishing e-mails contain software that can harm your computer or track your activities on the internet without your knowledge. Anti-virus & Anti-spyware software and firewall can protect you from inadvertently accepting such unwanted files.

If you receive an e-mail or find a website you think is pretending to be of Income Tax Department, forward the e-mail or website URL to phishing@incometax.gov.in. A copy may also be forwarded to incident@cert-in.org.in
